Sleep apnoea is a disorder when the throat becomes tight during sleep, blocking the airway. Patient may stop breathing for a fraction of the time (normally between few seconds to even one minute), reducing blood oxygen level which this one triggers the brain and makes the person to gasp or snore to take up more oxygen. This pattern can repeat hundreds of times every night which makes the person tired and sleepy the next day. This could affect the learning ability of the children in school.
There are a lot of causes for sleep apnoea including:
- Alcohol consumption
- Nasal congestion
- Abnormality of the jaws and the teeth
To treat the sleep apnoea, patient should be thoroughly assessed and causative factors should be identified.
One of the most advanced treatment modalities of the sleep apnoea is using a special mouth device which is called mandibular advancement splint. This device is made by dentist with consultation with the patient’s sleep physician.
